Riley Mongan heads up the Melbourne arm of 10×10 Philanthropy. A movement created by Australians seeking a deeper connection with community and more meaning from their work.
10×10 Philanthropy is an events-based platform delivering funding and increasing awareness for grassroots and start-up charities as they tackle complex social problems.
This year through the peak of COVID-19, the Melbourne 10×10 committee had to quickly move from the standard event style fundraiser and come up with a digital campaign. They formed a brand new committee to raise funds for Food For Change, and created a social campaign raising a massive $25,000 within the first four weeks.
Riley is also the Co-Founder and Director of an investment company called TraderPilot – who offer entry level investors with the opportunity to link their trading accounts with experienced fund managers around the world.
We asked Riley about how he cultivates kindness in his life and how it has helped him along his journey…
How would you describe yourself in one sentence?
I’m a pragmatic optimist whose calling in life is to help people get the best out of themselves.
What does kindness mean to you and how do you apply it to your life and the work that you do?
Kindness is understanding that every person has the right to have their opinions heard without being pre-judged on appearance or level of wealth. I apply this by actively listening to the goals of my clients and helping them to understand their potential.
How has being kind helped you along your journey?
Being kind to myself has helped me deal with the pressure of working in the financial services industry. Once I learned how to be more kind to myself, I’ve gone about sharing that with others and my circle of influence has not only grown, but become more quality.
What inspires you?
I’m inspired by possibility. There are so many great stories in the world from people who have made a conscious choice to add value to our world. I’m inspired by the fact I can help others on their journey by being myself.
Do you have any daily rituals?
Yes, about 4 months ago I started having cold showers in the morning. After that, I get a coffee from the shop down the road, walk my dog and meditate for 4 minutes before I reply to any emails. I find this helps me to look at situations more clearly.
Do you know what your purpose or ‘why’ is?
My purpose is to share the knowledge I’ve gained over the years with as many people as I can. Unlocking the potential in others motivates me to be better.
Who is your #1 kindness role model and why?
My mother. Mum has always been kind to everyone, even when they haven’t returned the favour. I aspire to be more like her in this regard.
